Overview
While a good alliance is not essential, it has great potential to increase your survival rate, though they do have their disadvantages, such as making enemies solely due to your alliance affiliation. The best way to find an alliance is to chat and get to know people. Not only will you have a better idea of who you're dealing with, your alliance will also be more meaningful, be more than just an alliance in name only. Alternatively, you may accept whatever alliance offers you may get. Most such random invitations will be to "newbie alliances"—alliances whose owner invites any loc he gets his hands on—but you may luck out. If after checking out its membership list and reading its forums you don't like what you see, you can always quit and wait for a better offer.

Defensive Alliances
The defensive alliance is the only form of alliance that has any direct impact on the game. Each member pledges 0-10% of his military as reinforcements in the event of attacks on his allies. The set percentage of each allies current military, not counting aid that is already out, is sent immediately after each attack. They don't return until the attacked member uses a turn. Many alliances set strict pledge requirements, but I recommend leaving it to each member's individual choice. If anyone isn't pulling their own weight, ask them to raise their pledge or dismiss them from the alliance.

While allied aid can make a big difference in defending yourself from attacks, there is a downside. The larger and/or more aggressive an alliance, the more often your troops will be out. Members who aren't very active can be frustrating as you wait anxiously for him to use a turn and send your troops back home.

Communcations Alliance
Communications alliances are purely cooperative and play no direct effect in Forgotten World. Allies may send aid, or retaliate for attacks, or give you dispels, but any assistance is purely by choice. Since you can do the same exact thing whether you're actually allied or not, I fail to see the point of the communcations alliance.

Owning an Alliance
To create an alliance, simply choose which type of alliance you're interested in, enter the name in the name window, and click "Create Alliance". In choosing a name, avoid names that begin with "The" and/or end with the alliance type, as alliance names will be displayed in the form "the <alliance name> <alliance type> alliance". To disband your alliance, simply click "Dissolve Alliance"

To invite new members to your alliance, highlight their names in the window to the right by left clicking them and click "Invite Selected". Don't invite someone just because you have their loc, invite someone because you know and trust him. Members may be removed at any time by highlighting their name in the alliance list to the left and clicking "Dismiss Selected"

Contact pathfinder to set up your alliance mail in the Forgotten World Classic Forums.

Ideally, creating an alliance will be more than simply clicking a button and inviting strangers. Have things like goals, membership requirements, history, etc in mind. Make your alliance mean something. Racial alliances have always been popular, but Brow Gree, the Dwarven alliance back in the old Def-Con days, of which I was a proud member, was the only racial alliance that has ever amounted to anything, partly due to game changes that made Dwarves very powerful around the time of BG's creation, but also because of the great leadership of Morlax.
